French Hood Images

Full View of Mary Fitzalan

Mary Fitzalan, Duchess of Norfolk (?). Panel painting by Hans Eworth, 1565. Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Fund.

This is an interesting blend of styles from the older Tudor gowns of the 1550s, worn with the small ruff suit at the neck and wrists of the 1560s. Even the French hood appears more appropriately worn in the 1550s. Janet Arnold notes there is a question of who this may actually be, and when this was actually painted. This ensemble may have been worn to Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1559, with the painting a possibe copy of an original from that time. If so, then this may be an image of Margaret Audley, and not Mary Fitzalan.
