French Hood Images

Full View of Unknown Girl

Unknown Girl Aged 20, by John Bettes II, 1587.

The book I scanned this from states that "(u)pper and nether billiments of pearls decorate the back of the head." I can also see two strips of black material, and a strip of white, that suggests more than simple billiments. This might be a French hood with the hood that is hidden by the very large ruff.

A much larger version of this image is available at Wikimedia Commons, so you can see greater detail on the outfit, such as the ruff and the embroidery on the sleeves. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:UnknownGirlJohnBettesII1587.jpg
