French Hood Images

Detail View of "A Man Confessing"

"A Man Confessing", from Book of Hours, vol 3, fol. 51v, Master of James IV of Scotland. Probably Ghent, ca. 1500. Collection: Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostilica Vaticana, Vat. lat. 3770.

My focus for this image is the back view of the hood worn by the woman on the foreground floor. Notice how it is completely black in covering her head, and also overshadows the face. Other images show a colored lining folded away from the face. Also note the remnant of a possible liripipe hanging down and then back up (although it might be something else).

With thanks to Lady Teleri of Gwynedd, aka Barbara Perrotta, for the loan of her wonderful book.
