Detail of A Visit to the Humanist Writer

A Visit to the Humanist Writer, Metamorphoses d'Ovide. Unknown illuminator. Dated to before 1487, executed in Brughes or Ghent.

"The nobleman visiting the author (or translator) with his wife and court is probably Wolfert van Borssel [a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece who commissioned this book]. Such scenes of visits are typical of the style of the Burgundian court. Behind the scholar are seven allegorical figures of planets; Venus, Mars, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, Uranus and Jupiter."
