Detail of Margaret More Roper

Detail Margaret More Roper, from a 1593 reproduction of a now-lost Hans Holbein portrait of all of the women of Thomas More's family.

This image is one of a few surviving family group portraits from the Tudor time period. It is a copy of the original Holbein painting of Sir Thomas More and his family, painted around 1527. That original was destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century.

I do not know who painted the portrait that this detail image comes from. The gown and headdress are similar to the other More paintings by Rowland Lockey, but the style of painting is different, as are details of the garment and headdress. This image shows more details.
