The Family of Thomas More

The Family of Thomas More, after Hans Holbein the Younger, painted by Rowland Lockey, 1593.

This image is one of a few surviving family group portraits from the Tudor time period. It is a copy of the original Holbein painting of Sir Thomas More and his family, painted around 1527. That original was destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century. Only a prepatory sketch by Holbein remains of the original.

This group portrait is noted as being painted by Sir Thomas' grandson Rowland Lockey in 1593. This is a different version than the miniature I have in this collection of images. It is closer to the Holbein sketch image.
