Detail of More Family Sketch

Study for the Family Portrait of Sir Thomas More, by Hans Holbein the Younger. c.1527.
Pen and brush in black on top of chalk sketch, 38.9 x 52.4 cm.
Kupferstichkabinett, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basle.

This is noted as being (from left to right) Cecily Heron (1507-15??) the youngest daughter, Margaret Roper (1505-1544) the eldest daughter, and Sir More's second wife, Lady Alice (1471-1546). Cecily appears to also be pregnant and is wearing the English version of a French hood. And there appears to be a monkey(?) on Lady Alice.

This image is one of a few surviving family group portraits from the Tudor time period. It is a prepatory sketch of the original Holbein painting of Sir Thomas More and his family, which was painted around 1527. That original was destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century.
