Decorative woodcut in golden colors

Start: June 3, 2012
Finish: September 10, 2012
Finished size: 4" tall by 3.5" wide.

This is a project that was created for Nordwache's Baronial regalia - for one of the two baronial mantles. It is one of four pieces that will be worked by four different people. The main phoenix design was created by THLady Miriel Gard Yale, the baronial A&S Minister.

Note is that this is a reversed image from our usual phoenix position, as it will be matched to a phoenix facing in the proper direction on the chest of the mantle.

The gold work is done in two different gold threads. The bird is done in a Japanese thread couched in yellow thread. The flames are a thin coppery gold couched with red thread. Both golden threads were couched double.

The background fabric is a blue silk fabric, backed with cotton muslin. The flames are padded with two layers of yellow felt.

Historically, the gold threads would be run horizontally, but we chose to create more visual movement by following the outline of each motif. It would also be a little easier for us, since most of us working these badges have had only done one or two goldwork embroideries prior.

I did not blog about this to keep it a semi-secret, but I did take photos of my process. One unfinished element is the garnet bead that will be the eye of the phoenix.
