Illuminated Flower Border
Decorative woodcut in golden colors

In spring of 2011, I entered Caid's Kingdom competition known as Pentathlon. This required submitting at least 5 items in 4 different categories. As I was starting on a scroll of some difficulty at the time, I decided to create an example piece that was similar to the style of that scroll, in order to both learn the style, and to use the piece as one of the entries for this competition.

This piece was inspired directly from a facsimile piece in the book, The Macclesfield Alphabet Book, folio 44r, the far right column of flowers. I used Windsor and Newton Gouache paints for the colors, and modern pens for outline and the squiggles. I painted onto a Bristol board paper, smooth finish in a 9”x12” size, and used a 5/0 sable brush to paint. The project took me an intense week from start to finish (not something I recommend as my hands were painfully cramped when I was done).

Caid's Arts & Sciences Faire

The Illuminated Flower Border piece won Apprentice First Place, Visual Arts: Illumination, at the Kingdom of Caid's Arts & Sciences Faire and Pentathalon event in March 2011. My documentation pdf file can be found here (270k).
